BEUC wins the EU Health Awards for non-governmental organisations fighting Antimicrobial Resistance

The prize rewards outstanding initiatives by NGOs which have significantly reduced the threat of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) to human health. The European Consumer Organisation (BEUC) wins thanks to the antibiotic resistance campaign “From Farm to you”

From Farm to you:

25,000 people in the EU die from antimicrobial resistance each year. Advocating the interest of all European consumers, BEUC started the campaign in 2014, with the clear objective to:

  • Limit the use of antibiotics to sick animals.
  • Safeguard antibiotics critically important for treating people by: - ending use in farm animals of modern cephalosporins and fluoroquinolones - resistance to which is already high; - limiting use of others.
  • Reduce the need for antibiotics by improving farming practices such as hygiene and animal care.

On February 6th 2017, the EU Health Award ceremony was hosted by the University of Leuven in Belgium, in presence of EU Commissioner for Research, Science and Innovation Carlos Moedas and EU Commissioner for Health and Food Safety Vytenis Andriukaitis. Mr Andriukaitis clearly addressed the AMR threat in his speech: “The situation is now critical. Human and animal health is under threat, as well as sustainable food production and development.  There is a very real risk of us falling backwards into the past – back to a time when common infections and minor injuries could result in death.  There is already evidence that this is starting to happen”.

In 2011, the European Commission launched a 5-year Action Plan in response to the need for co-ordinated action against the rising threats from AMR. The EU Health Award reflects the interest in tackling this issue and encouraging EU NGOs like BEUC in fighting even more to protect EU citizens’ life.

Camille Perrin, Senior Food Policy Officer at The European Consumer Organisation (BEUC).
