Kemiluppen: the successful app of the Danish Consumer Council

Kemiluppen is the app created by Forbrugerrådet Tænk, the Danish Consumer Council. It helps consumers spot hormone-disruptive, carcinogenic and allergenic substances in their personal care products.

How does it work?

After downloading the app for free in the App Store or Google Play you can

  • take your product and turn the barcode upwards;
  • scan it with Kemiluppen and
  • get an assessment of your product.

In just 2 years, the app has been used more than 5 million times. With Kemiluppen, consumers can scan their personal care products and cosmetics and know if they contain unwanted chemicals. The unwanted substances appear on official lists by the EU, Danish and foreign authorities as well as research institutions.

By scanning the barcode, the consumer can look up the Chemistry Database and get immediate answers. This happens in 80 percent of the cases. If the product is not in the database, consumers via the app can submit snapshots of cover and ingredient list and request to have the product evaluated. Once the product is evaluated, the consumer receives an email with the reply. The answer is available to anyone else who scans the product in question. Consumers, therefore, help each other to get answers.
